North Korea Acknowledges Serious Naval Incident During Military Ceremony

On Thursday, North Korea’s main propaganda outlet reported that Kim Jong-un saw a “serious accident” during the launch of a new naval destroyer, resulting in significant damage to the vessel.

The Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) described the incident as one that “disintegrated the dignity and self-esteem of our nation,” warning that officials would face severe repercussions. Human rights abuses are rampant in North Korea, where people can be imprisoned for far lesser offenses than the military blunders that embarrass the regime.

North Korea takes pride in its military, often redirecting government funds to support illicit nuclear ambitions. They have conducted nuclear tests seven times, with the last one in 2017, and frequently launch missiles into the East Sea or the Pacific as a show of strength against perceived threats, particularly from South Korea and the United States. It’s puzzling why KCNA chose to report on this incident, especially considering the tight control over news outlets in the country.

Details about the mishap were scarce, but it was noted that the vessel, a “5,000 Tonnage Destroyer,” was attempting to leave the Chongjin Shipyard when the accident happened. The state newspaper Rodong Sinmun published a similar report but notably omitted any photos, which is unusual since Kim Jong-un typically appears in images when involved in military events.

KCNA stated that “a serious accident occurred during the launch of the destroyer,” attributing the mishap to “inexperienced commands and operational carelessness.” They reported that the vessel’s launch mechanism failed, causing significant structural damage.

The report emphasized Kim’s frustration at witnessing the disaster, rather than detailing the consequences for those involved. “Our respected comrade, Kim Jong-un, has harshly assessed this as a serious accident and a criminal act stemming from absolute carelessness,” KCNA declared.

Kim Jong-un criticized specific bodies like the WPK Central Committee’s Ammunition Industry Division and others, declaring that those responsible must be held accountable. The report mentioned that an “accident investigation group” would be formed to pinpoint blame.

Interestingly, there was no mention of Kim Jong-un’s daughter, who is believed to be around 12 and has been increasingly visible at public events. She recently attended a commemorative event at the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang.

The South Korean military stated they had assessed the KCNA report and were aware of the naval accident. “We were tracking the launch signs of a large vessel from Chongjin Port,” said a South Korean military spokesperson, confirming that the launch was a “failure.”

Other officials indicated that despite the incident, the ship might not be beyond repair, suggesting that unrealistic deadlines could have pressured military officials into hastening preparations.

Officials speculated that Kim Jong-un likely wanted emergency repairs completed by an upcoming party meeting, aiming to achieve results that could rival those of his predecessors.

Following the failed destroyer’s launch, North Korea reportedly fired several cruise missiles into the waters near Japan, an act that did not seem targeted but is part of their ongoing military provocations toward South Korea and Japan.
