North Korea censors pair of jeans on gardening show

The BBC TV program Garden Secrets was censored over the airwaves by North Korean authorities in an effort to prevent the influence of US imperialism in the communist country.

The gardening show, starring 74-year-old Alan Titchmarsh, received a pixelated overlay during a recent episode set in the gardens of 17th-century Hatfield House in Hertfordshire, England.

Episodes of the UK show have been shortened to 15 minutes from the original hour-long show that first aired in the UK in 2010. The episodes feature a North Korean narrator and a musical soundtrack.

The Socialist Patriotic Youth Union ordered citizens to refer to a pre-approved list of “appropriate” hairstyles to avoid punishment.

Kim Jong-un reportedly called on the youth group to crack down on “unpleasant, individualistic and anti-socialist behavior” among young people. The crackdown included banning foreign language speech, certain hairstyles, and Western clothing, which are considered “dangerous and poisonous.”
