North Korea launches rockets amid rising tensions with South Korea

North Korea Fires Rockets into Yellow Sea

On Thursday, North Korea launched over ten rockets into the Yellow Sea, just a day after South Korea conducted a joint air drill with the United States and Japan. This action underscores the rising tensions in the region.

Images showed upgraded 240mm rocket launchers in Pyongyang, which are believed capable of targeting South Korean population centers, including Seoul. This was highlighted by the North Korean leadership last year.

A South Korean military official informed local media that the projectiles, likely multiple launch rockets, traveled several dozen kilometers before landing in the Yellow Sea. Both South Korean and US intelligence agencies are currently analyzing the details closely.

On the previous day, South Korea, the US, and Japan participated in their first trilateral military aviation exercise under the new leadership of Lee Jae Myung, who was appointed earlier this month.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have been escalating recently. Reports indicate that Kim Jong Un plans to send up to 15,000 troops to aid Russia in its conflict in Ukraine, a decision tied to his growing collaboration with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

South Korean officials worry that Pyongyang could receive financial support and advanced military technology in return, potentially advancing its weapons program.

Meanwhile, Kim appears focused on accelerating both his nuclear and missile development initiatives, having visited various military factories across North Korea. He is pushing for increased production of munitions to keep pace with modern warfare demands.

This year, North Korea also succeeded in constructing two 5,000-ton naval destroyers, which Kim described as compelling evidence of the navy’s rapid evolution.
