Northern Light Health and Anthem Extend Contracts for 30 Days

Brewer, Maine (WABI) – In a press release issued Wednesday afternoon, Northern Light Health and Anthem announced they have agreed to extend their existing contracts for an additional 30 days. This extension aims to facilitate ongoing discussions towards a long-term agreement focused on affordability, patient access, and quality of care.

The two organizations were unable to finalize new contracts by the mediation deadline that occurred on Tuesday. They confirmed that healthcare providers, including primary care professionals, will remain within the network through October 31, 2025, for personal health plans sponsored by Anthem’s employer.

In their announcement, they mentioned that inpatient care and services from the outpatient department will continue within the network of personal plans offered by Anthem until December 31, 2025. Additionally, all Northern Light Hospitals will be included in the National Anthem Medicare Advantage Plan network until the same date.

The two parties also indicated they will consider structuring new contracts to ensure clear start and end dates, further enhancing clarity for patients and members.

Northern Light Health and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield have agreed to this 30-day extension as they work toward a long-term agreement prioritizing affordability and access to quality care. This means:

  • Healthcare providers, including primary care professionals, will remain in the network through October 31, 2025, for Anthem’s employer-sponsored personal health plans.
  • Northern Light inpatient care and services from the hospital’s outpatient department will continue in the National Anthem’s employer-sponsored personal plans and networks until December 31, 2025.
  • All Northern Light Hospitals and physicians will retain their affiliation with Anthem’s Medicare Advantage Plans through December 31, 2025.

The discussions will also explore the possibility of establishing consistent start and end dates in new contracts to provide clarity for patients and members.
