Northern Light Health reveals new insurance arrangement for Mainers

New Agreement Between Northern Light Health and Community Health Options

PORTLAND, Maine — Northern Light Health has announced a new collaboration with Community Health Options, a Maine-based insurance provider.

The agreement comes shortly after the conclusion of contract negotiations with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, which will take effect on January 1, 2026.

A 2024 report from Community Health reveals that the organization serviced 31,592 members and processed around 415,000 claims, totaling nearly $194 million for the year.

Northern Light has indicated that this partnership aims to lower costs and enhance access to healthcare services for residents, especially those in rural and northern parts of Maine.

The contract encompasses 1,000 Northern Light Health providers across nine hospitals and over 127 locations throughout the state.

“We’ve been collaborating with Northern Light for several years now to cut costs for our members while directing them to some of the best care available in Maine,” commented a spokesperson.

The deal promises improved fees and is set to minimize the need for prior approval for inpatient care. Additionally, out-of-pocket costs and coinsurance will be reduced for key services at all Northern Light facilities. New plans are also anticipated during future open enrollment periods, pending regulatory approval.

The agreement ensures that members’ hospitalizations will be granted, removing the uncertainty surrounding prior authorizations for extending necessary treatments.

“We are excited to enhance our customers’ access to high-quality services while also lowering overall costs,” shared Joanne Lauterbach, CFO of Community Health Options. “This new contract will allow us to better serve our members’ health and well-being.”

Community Health Options stated that members will experience a more streamlined payment model, which will include detailed billing from Northern Light.

“This new agreement represents a significant benefit for our statewide members, establishing a more efficient and affordable pathway to essential care. It’s always gratifying to partner with an organization that prioritizes the needs of Maine’s patients and community members,” added another representative.

Community Health Options is a nonprofit, member-led health insurance company based in Maine.
