Northern Light Health reveals new insurance deal for Mainers

Northern Light Health has recently finalized a new agreement with Community Health Options, an insurance provider based in Maine. This deal, which will take effect on January 1, 2026, follows Northern Light’s recent announcement of concluding contract discussions with National Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.

As noted in a 2024 report from Community Health, the organization supported over 31,000 members that year and processed approximately 415,000 claims totaling around $194 million. Northern Light believes this agreement will significantly improve healthcare access and reduce costs, especially for those residing in rural and northern parts of Maine.

The contract encompasses 1,000 providers affiliated with Northern Light across nine hospitals and over 127 locations throughout the state. It comes with improved fee structures, a lesser requirement for prior authorization for inpatient services, and outlines out-of-pocket and coinsurance obligations for all priority providers at Northern Light facilities. Furthermore, new plans are expected to be available during future open enrollment, pending regulatory approval.

Northern Light emphasizes that all hospitalizations for community health members will be covered, thus eliminating the need for discussions about prior approvals for extending treatment durations.

Joanne Lauterbach, Chief Financial Officer of Community Health Options, remarked, “We are thrilled to announce our commitment to providing a wide array of services to our customers. This new contract will enhance access to high-quality care at a lower total cost, ultimately promoting better health and well-being for our members.”

The organization also stated that community health members would experience a more efficient billing process, with itemized invoices being streamlined from Northern Light. “This agreement represents a significant milestone for our statewide community health options members, paving a way for more efficient and cost-effective care,” Lauterbach added.

Community Health Options operates as Maine’s sole nonprofit, member-led health insurance provider.
