Northrop Grumman’s Semiconductor Production in the U.S.

Northrop Grumman, a defense company based in Virginia, produces millions of semiconductor chips each year in the United States. Max Gorden from Fox Business reported on-site at the company’s Baltimore, Maryland plant.

During his visit, Gorden showcased “wafers,” which contain thousands of microchips. He noted, “They’re all here and they’re finally cut off towards the end of the process.” There’s also a “clean room” where staff test the microchips before they exit the production line.

Northrop Grumman stated that its chips are utilized in various military applications, including aircraft, radar systems, electronic tanks, and satellites. The production timeline for these chips is usually a few weeks, though it can be expedited if national security requires it.

Interestingly, chips can range significantly in price, varying from just a few cents to hundreds of thousands of dollars, dependent on their complexity. Dave Shahin, a senior manager at Northrop Grumman, emphasized to Fox Business that the microelectronics produced in Maryland are integral to defense systems, describing them as the “brain and nervous system” that help ensure the safety of fighters.

For decades, Northrop Grumman has been manufacturing chips solely within the United States and appears to be well-positioned despite the evolving landscape. With the Trump administration exploring potential tariffs on imported semiconductors, it is relevant to note the major producers of these chips, including countries like Taiwan, China, and South Korea.

Beyond microelectronics, Northrop Grumman is involved in producing a broad spectrum of military aircraft, defense systems, and technologies. As of Friday afternoon, the company’s market capitalization was approximately $74.644 billion.
