Controversy Over FIFA’s Decision on Balogun
It seems Belgium isn’t the only country feeling the heat.
After FIFA’s unexpected ruling that allowed Folarin Balogun to participate in Monday’s Round 16 match against Seattle—despite a red card in the prior game against the United States—Norway’s coach, Ståle Solbakken, joined others in criticizing the decision. It caught many off guard.
Belgian head coach Rudi Garcia described the situation as ridiculous, and his federation expressed “surprise” at what they called a “direct contradiction” of the tournament’s rules, indicating they were looking into all possible avenues.
Solbakken expressed concern that the lack of clarity surrounding this ruling could diminish the significance of the U.S. victory. “Honestly, I think that was a major mistake by FIFA,” he remarked following Norway’s victory over Brazil. “Balogun got a red card, and VAR confirmed that. He should be suspended for a match.”
He continued, noting the potential fallout: “This could really put a shadow over America’s win. If he scores or performs well against Belgium, the frustration from them will be palpable.” It’s a tangled situation, to say the least.
Moreover, in light of the decision, President Trump reportedly reached out to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, urging a review of the red card situation. Solbakken raised concerns about the kind of precedent this uncommon reversal could establish for future matches.
“What will happen with the next red card? Is there a committee that just decides to take that away?” Solbakken asked rhetorically. “This is a really troubling decision that could negatively affect the integrity of the World Cup. It’s not good for the sport; it’s not good for FIFA.”
