Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s rare chronic lung condition worsens in heartbreaking update

The Norwegian royal has issued a heartbreaking update on Princess Crown Prince Mette Maritt's rare cancer battle, saying that she needs “more rest” as her situation worsens.

The 51-year-old royal family is losing health in her fight Pulmonary fibrosis – An incurable condition that injures the lungs and causes shortness of breath.

The Palace has since said that the conditions have influenced her royal duties.

“The Crown Prince has daily symptoms and illnesses that affect her ability to perform her duties.” Official Statement read. “The Crown Prince needs more rest and her everyday life changes faster than before.”

“This means that changes to her official schedule can occur more frequently and with short notices than we're used to,” the statement continued.

“The Crown Prince has a strong desire to continue working, so he will organize her official program in the best possible way so that she can combine her health with her work.”

Princess Cancer Battle was released in October 2018.

At the time, Royal said her condition “means my ability to work.”

Her condition worsened significantly when she was forced to take sick leave for several weeks in September 2023 and October 2024, then cancelled all the royal engagements at the time.

“When you turn 50, you realize that life is not eternal,” she told Norwegian Daily DN in August 2023 ahead of her 50th birthday.

Princess Mette Marius Borg Hoyby was arrested and detained on rape charges last November, and was faced with difficult months.

The 28-year-old, the eldest son of a princess born before he married an heir to the Norwegian throne, was arrested on suspicion of allegedly raping a woman in Oslo.

Police eventually let him go and said they didn't have enough important evidence for the case to continue him in custody.

He has since been released from custody, but Oslo police have launched a new investigation into new sexual assault allegations against Borg Hoyby, who has not been charged with him.
