Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege dead at 25 after ‘serious crash’ in Tour of Austria

“We are devastated by the tragic passing of Andre Draege,” read a statement posted to X. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Andre’s family and loved ones during this extremely difficult time.”

“Andre’s family wishes privacy as they mourn his passing and ask that their wishes be respected.”

Race Organizer Drege said he was involved in a “very serious accident” on a downhill stretch during the fourth stage of the race.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Andre Droege. On Saturday 6th July, Andre was involved in a very serious accident on the Grossglockner descent during stage 4 of the Tour of Austria, where he fell and sustained serious injuries,” the statement posted on Twitter said. Italian cyclist Filippo Ganna won the stage but race organizers called off the ceremony.

According to the BBC, Drage has won seven races this year and was expected to move up to WorldTour level next year.
