Not Time for Thoughts and Prayers, We Need ‘Gun Control’

Sunny Hostin told her co-stars on ABC’s “The View” on Monday that the aftermath of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump is no time for reflection or prayer.

She argued that now is the time to advocate for “gun control.”

Hostin said, “President Biden’s Oval Office speech should be a message to all of us. I will follow his words that there is no place for political violence in this country. I think he’s absolutely right, but if you look at the statistics, political violence is on the rise in this country like it’s never been before. The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University just released a report in January that found that it’s not just high-profile politicians who are receiving threats; 43% of state legislators and 18% of local office holders say they have received threats.”

She continued, “Then Robert Pape, a very well-known political scientist from the University of Chicago, did a national poll last month on this issue. Ten percent of those surveyed said it would be justified to use force to stop Donald Trump from becoming president. A third of those respondents said they own a gun. And then 7 percent of those surveyed said they would support the use of force to restore Trump to the presidency, and half of those said they own a gun. So, I know everybody always says it’s too early to talk about guns. We should talk about guns because a father of two died tragically, but we should pray. I’m not. It’s time to talk about the common thread in this assassination attempt, which is America’s fascination with and obsession with owning guns.”

“I think the issue of gun control is going to be even more important right now,” Hostin added.

She concluded, “I think we need to have an honest, serious conversation about actual gun control laws.”
