Notre Dame lost their fourth Sunday in their last five games. This time they faced Louisville and dropped the record 11-14.
However, after the loss, in her second season at South Bend, men's basketball coach Mika Shrewsbury tore not his team, but to Notre Dame fans.
Angry at the support shown to Louisville in the Notre Dame building, Shrewsbury, 48, criticised the Fighting Ireland fan base and kicked him out of the press conference while slamming the microphone.
“I sat there and saw more Louisville fans here than people from Notre Dame, and that's embarrassing,” Shrewsbury said after the loss. “I'm the head coach here, so that's embarrassing for me. Yes, I took us into this predicament, but don't come back when we win. You'll do that I believe it better.”
That's not happened so far for Shrewsbury, who returned Pennsylvania to the NCAA Tournament in his final season with the Nittany Lions two years ago.
Following that run, he left Big Ten School for Notre Dame and the ACC, replacing longtime coach Mike Bray.
After 13-20 last year, the Irish are 11-14 this season and 5-9 at the ACC.
“Everyone who gave up on me should trust it,” Shrewsbury said. “Tell this date and trust us, because we are going to roll this thing. [I] Don't worry if you gave up or not. ”
Shrewsberry isn't new to making criticism after the game, but when he did it in December 2023, he was aiming for the players – he actually apologized to Notre Dame fans .
It came after a loss of 20 points at the fortress house.
“I apologize to anyone who paid to come from that team to see that effort,” Shrewsbury said after the defeat in his first season at Notre Dame.
“One thing is you can see at least one team playing hard. The Citadels were connected. I thought they played hard, they played for purpose. I thought we did and thought our team was poor in that field. This game ended before we got here. Shootaround has no energy. There was no energy in practice. That's what this It's a team.”
