Notre Dame Introduces New Policy Following College Football Playoff Exclusion

Notre Dame’s CFP Exclusion Sparks Frustration

Notre Dame found itself on the outside looking in when the College Football Playoff (CFP) committee neglected to include them this year. Athletic director Pete Bevacqua addressed this confusion, emphasizing that such an oversight won’t happen again.

This statement came in light of the CFP’s decision to leave Notre Dame out of the 12-team playoff despite having been ranked among the top 12 for over a month. Bevacqua’s comments were shared during an interview with Yahoo Sports.

Beginning with the 2026 season, if the Irish rank in the top 12, they’ll be guaranteed a playoff spot according to an agreement made with CFP officials. Additionally, if the playoffs expand to 14 teams, Notre Dame will also secure a place if they finish 13th or better.

If discussions about a future 16-team format come to fruition, a new understanding would be needed for Notre Dame to ensure their status.

Unfortunately for Irish fans, this announcement came too late. If the current agreement had been in place this season, Notre Dame, ranked 11th, would have made the playoffs instead of being the first team left out.

As reported by Breitbart Sports, controversy arose regarding how the committee evaluated Notre Dame against Miami. Despite Miami’s victory over the Irish in their opening game, Notre Dame was ranked 10th, while Miami sat at 18th. Even after both teams continued to win in the following weeks, the committee ultimately placed Miami ahead of Notre Dame in the final rankings.

In his chat with Yahoo Sports, Bevacqua voiced his frustration with the committee’s inconsistent messaging. He stated, “There is no explanation that can justify this outcome. Our head coach Marcus Freeman and I both agree that previous rankings were misleading and unnecessary. Why subject young athletes to such uncertainty and then disappoint them without clear reasoning?”

“It feels as though our student-athletes had their playoff hopes taken away from them,” he added.

After being informed of their exclusion from the CFP, Notre Dame opted not to accept a bowl invitation.
