Notre Dame’s Commitment to Marcus Freeman
Notre Dame is clearly keen on keeping Marcus Freeman at the helm. This week, Irish athletic director Pete Bevacqua made it known that there’s significant interest in Freeman from both the college football scene and the NFL.
“Everyone’s eyes are on Marcus,” Bevacqua commented to reporters. “Colleges want him, NFL teams are eyeing him, and even Hollywood might be taking notice. He’s truly the best coach for Notre Dame and ranks among the greatest in college football.” It’s an endorsement that can’t be missed.
At just 39, Freeman has racked up an impressive 43-12 record over four seasons at Notre Dame, even guiding the Fighting Irish to the national championship game last season, which is no small feat.
Bevacqua emphasized that they are making sure Freeman knows he’s valued in South Bend. “I can say with absolute certainty that he feels that way, and Notre Dame fully understands how important college football is to the institution,” he added. “…I’m ensuring he knows he’s in the right place, and that his compensation is among the best in college coaching.” That’s quite a reassurance for any coach.
Given Freeman’s success, his name has been mentioned for potential NFL head coaching roles, including the opening with the Giants.
Earlier this month, Freeman expressed gratitude when talking about the Giants position. “I’m humbled to be considered by such an organization. I’ve always had great respect for all NFL teams, especially the Giants, with their storied history,” he said. “It’s just a reminder of the honor I have in this role and the gratitude I feel, because if we weren’t successful, none of this would be happening.” A thoughtful reflection, really.
Additionally, Penn State seemed interested in Freeman following the firing of James Franklin earlier in October.
This past week, the Fighting Irish faced a controversial exit from the College Football Playoff against teams like Alabama and Miami, both of which also had losses. Subsequently, Notre Dame declined a bowl invitation after not making it into the expanded playoff field.
