Notts against Hampshire, Essex versus Yorkshire, and more: county cricket – live coverage

Weather Update It’s mostly dry across the region, except in the southwest, where scattered showers and potential thunderstorms are expected. There’s a glimmer of hope for the northwest, which might catch a few drops of rain later.

Good Morning! Today feels quite nice—started with a dog walk alongside a good friend, then a bit too much coffee in the garden, and now I’m all set to catch some county cricket. Let’s see if Northants, Kent, Hampshire, Essex, and Worcestershire can dodge their upcoming challenges. Wishing the Warwickshire bowlers all the best; it may just be a long day ahead. Play kicks off at 11 AM.

Exciting Performances In a standout game, three batsmen excelled for Warwickshire, who declared at a staggering 665 runs for five against Surrey on a roasting Edgbaston pitch. New Zealand’s Tom Latham, making his debut, scored an impressive 184 runs. Ed Barnard contributed a career-high 177, but it’s Zen Malik’s ascent that’s turning heads. After years of proving himself across various teams, he’s finally made it to Birmingham and, in his second first-class match at 27, he made an effortless hundred, lofting a shot over Dan Lawrence’s head. Barnard also had a productive day, claiming Rory Burns’s wicket before the end of play, indicating that another tough day for the bowlers is on the horizon.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Abbas showcased his skills on his Nottinghamshire debut. Against his former club Hampshire, he picked up five wickets, with one glorious delivery that topped Ben Brown’s off stump. Kyle Abbott also played a crucial role, scoring 67 to maintain a lead of 137 before grabbing the new ball and dismissing both openers. Things got a bit hectic when Notts lost three wickets quickly, but Liam Patterson-White and Jack Haynes managed to stabilize the situation. A lead of 308 should be more than sufficient as Abbas gears up for more action.

A disciplined performance from George Hill resulted in a solid 123 runs for Essex in Chelmsford, although it was a challenging pitch. After a shaky start at 59 for six, there was a flicker of revival with contributions from Michael Pepper and Noah Thain. But the end came swiftly. Adam Lyth also made a strong showing for Yorkshire.

Sussex took control against Worcestershire at Hove, thanks to Fynn Hudson-Prentice’s five wickets and John Simpson’s six catches. Tom Taylor kept the momentum going with a score of 32, leading Sussex to build a substantial lead of 170 runs by the end of the day.

In other updates, Marcus Harris, the run machine for Lancashire, recorded his third hundred of the Championship season, lifting his total for the year over 700 runs. Unfortunately for Northants bowlers, catching opportunities were missed.

Ben Kellaway completed the necessary runs for his first-class century but didn’t stop there, smashing three sixes off Matt Parkinson to finish with 181 not out, marking the highest score for Glamorgan against Kent. However, Kent faced a meltdown, collapsing from 23 for five to 156 for eight at stumps. Chris Benjamin’s highest score for Kent was a not out 68. “Theoretically, we should ignore the scoreboard,” said Kent’s head coach Adam Hollioake, “but, well, we’re all human and scoreboard pressure is real.”
