Novak Djokovic addresses reporter about 'pursuing' opponents at Australian Open

Novak Djokovic Advances to Semi-finals of the Australian Open

After winning his match at the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic engaged in an interesting exchange with a reporter, particularly about his long-standing pursuit of rivals over the years. This win marks his progress to the semi-finals, where he will face off against two-time champion Jannik Sinner.

In his quarter-final match on Wednesday, the 38-year-old defeated fifth-seeded Lorenzo Musetti. During the post-match press conference, Djokovic was asked how it felt to “chase” other tennis stars like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal early in his career, and now Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. His response? A bit pointed.

“Am I following Yannick and Carlos? In what sense?” he asked, seeming to challenge the notion that he’s merely a pursuer. The reporter, perhaps flustered, acknowledged Djokovic’s impressive 24 Grand Slam titles, to which Djokovic humorously noted, “Thank you. It’s important to say that once in a while, right?”

This interaction seemed to reveal a more complex perspective from the Serbian player. He commented on how the dynamics of rivalry have shifted over his career, highlighting, “I think it’s a little disrespectful that you’re missing out on what happened between when I started ‘chasing’ Rafa and Roger, as you say, and now when I’m chasing Carlos and Jannik. There’s probably a period of about 15 years between me winning Grand Slams.”

Djokovic acknowledged the talent of both Alcaraz and Sinner, saying they are “better than almost everyone right now.” Yet, he does not view himself as in pursuit of them. He mentioned the potential for more superstars emerging in tennis, emphasizing that rivalries and differing playing styles are beneficial for the sport. “I think these kinds of rivalries…are very good for tennis,” he expressed. He also stated firmly, “I don’t feel like I’m chasing. I’m making my own history.”

As Djokovic prepares to face Sinner in the semi-finals, he’s eyeing another historic title, which could be his 25th Grand Slam.
