The National Women's Football League (NWSL) Boston-based expansion team announced that it will be renamed on Friday. The change comes after a wave of transgender backlash towards abandoned marketing campaigns in October.
The team was scheduled to be named Bos Nation FC. This was announced at a fall branding event, along with a marketing campaign featuring “too many balls.” The slogan has spurred a fierce backlash from the transgender community, including NWSL players.
The transgender player who goes to the singularly named Quinn, who plays in Seattle's reign, opposed the announcement of the team's branding in an Instagram post.
“I feel transphobic. Eeks,” Quinn wrote.

The team quickly abandoned the slogan, announcing a public apology for it, and even thanking those who opposed it.
“We fully acknowledge that the content of the campaign does not reflect the safe and welcoming environment we strive to create for everyone, and we apologise for the hurt we have caused to the LGBTQ+ community and especially the trans community,” the statement said.
“We thank all those who have called on us to do better and took responsibility for us, and we will hear you.

Earlier this month, the club hired new Chief Revenue Officer Amina Bluman, former chief brand and strategy officer for NFL Commander Washington since September 2020, when the team had shifted from its previous “Redskins” branding.
Now, the Boston-based women's soccer team is opting to change the proposed name as well, erasing all traces of the branding that came out of the October announcement.
“The club expands with sincerity thanks to our supporters. That passionate voice is deeply valued by us. Not only for their unwavering support, but also for honest and critical feedback.”
“We were not able to complete this process without your input. We aim to build a lasting legacy that will make all our fans welcome, connect and proud to wear our colours and cheer for our names for future generations.”
The issue of trans-inclusion in women's sports proved to be one of the most controversial political topics of last fall, as circumstances involving trans-athletes have prompted multiple lawsuits and federal investigations in the past six months alone.

Data suggest that the majority of Americans are opposed to the inclusion of trans into women's sports, and this issue even occurred in the 2024 election results.
