NY Bill Requiring Warning Signs at Gun Store Entrances Awaits Gov. Hochul’s Signature

A bill passed by the New York State Assembly that would require gun store owners to post warning signs at their store entrances is now awaiting Governor Kathy Hawkle’s (D) signature.

Wham report The signs are intended to address the alleged risks associated with owning a firearm.

Amoland explanation The warning sign would read, “The availability of weapons and firearms in the home significantly increases the risk of suicide, death during domestic disputes, and/or the untimely death of children, family members or others. If you or a loved one is experiencing distress or depression, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988.”

Brandon Lewis, owner of The Firing Pin Indoor Shooting Range & Gun Shop in Bergen, New York, believes the sign requirement is just another example of state lawmakers targeting gun store owners without seriously addressing the causes of gun violence.

Lewis Said“We see this as just addressing the symptoms of trying to solve some of the societal problems we have, rather than the underlying issues.”

He added: “Are car manufacturers going to be forced to say that if you buy this car, you’re more likely to be in a car accident?”

Rochester City Councilman Willie Lightfoot (D) doesn’t think requiring warning signs is an attack on gun store owners.

“We want to be clear that there has been no attack on gun dealers or lawful gun owners,” he said.

Lightfoot added, “But we need to give due diligence to the 10 percent of gun dealers who are operating immorally and unethically. We’re also advocating for more inspections. Some of these gun dealers are only inspected once every 10 years. We’re asking for annual inspections of these gun dealers.”

Lightfoot did not explain what would be accomplished by forcing nine out of 10 law-abiding people to post signs because of the actions of one in 10 gun store owners.
