New York Rep. Ritchie Torres blasted Squad member Rep. Jamaal Bowman for his expletive-laced tirade at a rally he hosted with fellow progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as “outrageous.”
“The level of profanity here is shockingly unbecoming of a member of Congress,” Torres, who left the Congressional Progressive Caucus earlier this year over differences over Israel, wrote on X. “Jamaal Bowman’s erratic denunciations bear no resemblance to the decency of the people I know in the South Bronx.”
During the speech At an expletive-filled rally in the Bronx, Bowman blasted the American Israel Public Affairs Political Action Committee (AIPAC), a pro-Israel advocacy group that is backing his Democratic primary opponent, Westchester County Mayor George Latimer.
“We’re going to show f***ing AIPAC the power of the f***ing South Bronx,” Bowman said at a rally Saturday at St. Mary’s Park in Mott Haven. “You ask me why I’m being f***ing abusive. What am I supposed to do? They’re coming after me! They’re coming after my family! They’re coming after my children! Shouldn’t I fight back?”

“We’re going to show them who we are!” he added, bouncing around the stage.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) endorsed Bowman in a progressive rally. The incumbent Democrat is trailing Latimer by double digits ahead of Tuesday’s primary in New York’s 16th Congressional District, which includes parts of Westchester County and the Bronx. A video that went viral also showed fellow “Squad” member Ocasio-Cortez forcefully letting her hair down, slamming the podium and knocking over a microphone. During her speech, she shouted out loud as sexually explicit lyrics from Cardi B’s song “Enough” played over the speakers.

At another moment, Bowman, wearing a yellow T-shirt with rolled up sleeves, swung a wooden chair up and down on a stage in the Bronx, then led the crowd in chants of “Cease now, ceasefire now.”
Bowman is at risk of losing his seat amid a divide between progressives and moderates in the Democratic Party over the war between Israel and Hamas.

Torres has not publicly endorsed anyone in the race, telling Axios last week that her “principle is that I’m not going to oppose any Democrat that doesn’t speak out against me.”

“However, Mr. Bowman’s unfair attacks on my character may cause me to reconsider this rule. Stay tuned,” Torres said.
