Kathy Hochul’s Political Maneuvering
Kathy Hochul has aligned herself with socialist Zoran Mamdani, using him as a way to buffer against criticism from the left, according to Political Insider.
This past Tuesday, Hochul defended her support for Mamdani, responding to former President Trump by insisting that he “stop.”
Democratic consultant Michael Ceraso noted, “She’s sort of hidden behind the voice leader in favor of Zoran. Her approach doesn’t align with the New York City-led resistance.”
Sources claim Hochul’s backing of Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race aims to shield her from a contentious challenge next year, particularly from Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Delgado, who is perceived as estranged.
However, Mamdani has not reciprocated her support. He distanced himself from Hochul on Monday, deeming it premature to discuss “The Beyond Thing.”
Experts believe Hochul has gained some credibility among New York Democrats by associating with Mamdani, especially as he represents a progressive voice. Yet, there seems to be a disconnect regarding the broader policy platform across the state.
Alyssa Cass, from Slingshot Strategies, commented on the dynamic: “He’s coming to the blue city regardless of what those leaders are saying. Democrat voters want a leader who can hold their ground.”
Although Hochul initially presented herself as a leader against Trump, she has maintained a surprisingly productive relationship with him. After Trump’s 2024 election win, they began discussions on repairs for the collapsed Penn Station.
Despite opposing Trump’s stance on certain issues, they appear to have found common ground, as he has instructed the Fed to oversee the station’s reconstruction. There have even been hints of renaming it to attract more federal funds.
Unlike other Democratic regions, Hochul has managed to keep the National Guard out of New York, emphasizing that crime has decreased and that new policies are in effect.
GOP consultant Dave Catalfamo argues that Hochul has, so far, benefited from her New York status with Trump. “It’s more about his special relationship with New York than anything she’s done,” he remarked.
State Conservative Party Chairman Jerry Kassar expressed little surprise at Hochul’s leftward shift, but warned that her support for Mamdani could sour her relations with Trump. “I think the relationship is deteriorating. She made this decision for political convenience. It’s been in the works for a while,” he stated.
