NY governor fuels hate crime speculation in transgender slaying despite evidence

New York Governor Kathy Hochul promoted the speculation of hate crimes in the murder of a 24-year-old transgender victim as the District Attorney's Office and state police said there were no “signs” of such motivation.

“I have directed the state police to provide all the support and resources to the district attorney as we continue our investigation, including whether this is a hate crime,” Hochul wrote. Sunday's Statement.

The Hochul post came on the same day as a joint statement from the New York State Police and the Ontario County District Attorney. New York State Police said they found the body of 24-year-old Sam Nordquist in Yates County Friday.

“At this point there is no indication that Sam's murder is a hate crime,” the Ontario County District Attorney's Office and New York State Police said on Sunday at its joint release. “To alleviate concerns that he can understand that his murder could be a hate crime, we have made it clear that Sam and his assailants are known to each other and identified as LGBTQ+. Altourga has four misdemeanor convictions, including minor theft, criminal trespassing and the sale of imitation control substances.

Sage was convicted of theft and spread the obscene material to minors. New York State records revealed he was on parole at the time of his arrest after being released from prison on May 30, 2024.

Goodwin was convicted of a child sex offense in 2015, and records show that he is a registered level 3 sex offender. Goodwin was convicted of the victim under the age of 11 and was found guilty by the Ontario County Sheriff's Office of a criminal conduct degree.

He was sent to prison for 10.5 years in 2015. According to New York State records, Goodwin was released and parole on June 6, 2023.

Searches for the state amendment system did not reveal any information about Alziago, Kijano or Motica.

Hochul's office said the governor is committed to providing a safe community for all.

“We continue to focus on these individuals being held accountable and will continue to strive tirelessly to complete the investigation into Sam's murder,” her office said.
