Hochul Raises $12 Million Amid Challenges
New York’s Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul managed to raise around $12 million in the first half of this year. However, her recent fundraising report, released on Monday, highlights the struggles she faces from two Republican challengers as the election approaches next year.
The report also reflects backing for democratic socialists, particularly in legal matters involving her party’s left-wing leaders. Zoran Mamdani recently surpassed several candidates, including three-term former Governor Andrew Cuomo, to win the Democratic mayoral nomination for New York City last month.
According to her campaign, over $11.8 million was raised, with notable grassroots contributions from various counties across the state. More than $4 million is earmarked for Hochul’s reelection campaign, while over $7 million will support the New York Democratic Committee, as reported by campaign aides.
This latest fundraising effort marks a slight increase from the $10 million Hochul filed for her reelection and the state Democratic committee late last year. “In the last six months, we’ve seen Gov. Hochul take on Donald Trump and make significant strides toward a safer, more affordable New York,” stated campaign manager Preston Elliott.
Hochul, who became the state’s first female governor in August 2021 after Cuomo resigned amid several scandals, had previously announced her intention to run for reelection in 2026. Yet, polls indicate that many New Yorkers are less than enthusiastic about her leadership.
A Siena University poll recently showed that a majority of voters are looking for “someone else” to lead the state, with half of the respondents believing New York is heading in the wrong direction. Furthermore, Hochul’s favorability ratings sit at 42% to 47%, and her job approval remains slightly positive at 50% to 45%.
Interestingly, Hochul has a notable lead against potential Republican challengers, exceeding 20 points in hypothetical matchups, even though she struggles to secure over 50% support.
Meanwhile, Rep. Elise Stefanik appears to be a key contender among three prominent Republicans eyeing the race against Hochul. In addition, her lieutenant governor, Antonio Delgado, launched a major challenge, but recent surveys suggest he has a steep hill to climb for the Democratic nomination.
Progressive leaders are rallying support behind Mamdani, a state legislator from Queens, who made headlines with his unexpected victory. Hochul commended him, with the mayoral race focusing heavily on affordability issues.
At a recent press event, Hochul defended Mamdani against fears of a potential takeover of New York City by Washington should a democratic socialist be elected mayor. “It’s the voters who decide who runs New York City,” she stated in a social media post, expressing concerns about Mamdani’s views on policing and his stance toward Israel.
Ultimately, the governor emphasized apprehension regarding the effects of Mamdani’s policies on city law enforcement and noted, “Everyone is worried about what will happen to the city police.”
