Matthew Schafer Selected as First Overall Pick in 2025 NHL Draft

In a noteworthy moment for the New York Islanders, Matthew Schafer was chosen as the first overall pick during the 2025 NHL Draft held at the Peacock Theatre. Despite facing challenges, including a collarbone injury that limited his play to just 17 games last season, Schafer’s performances established him as a top prospect.

He becomes the fifth defenseman to be selected first overall in the NHL Draft since 2000, following Owen Power, who went first to Buffalo in 2021.

Schafer’s journey to this accomplishment hasn’t been easy. His mother, Jennifer, passed away from cancer 16 months ago, and recently he also faced the loss of otter owner Jim Waters and his Billet family mother. It’s a somber backdrop that adds depth to his achievement.

In this year’s draft, the San Jose Sharks picked second, while the Chicago Blackhawks secured the third spot, all taking place in the new decentralized draft format in downtown Los Angeles.
