Nyara Sabally Steps Back from Eurobasket
Nyara Sabally will remain at home this month after all.
The German national basketball team announced on Wednesday that the center has decided to withdraw from Eurobasket to focus on her health and future aspirations.
In a translated statement, the 25-year-old expressed her disappointment, saying this was a “difficult decision,” as she had hoped to represent Germany.
“It’s really not an easy choice for me,” Sabally mentioned. “But with my knee rehabilitation, the demanding Eurobasket schedule, and an upcoming WNBA calendar, I’ve realized that prioritizing my health is essential. We want to see everyone who plays for Germany at Eurobasket succeed.”
Sabally had missed six consecutive WNBA games due to knee problems, returning recently with a strong performance—scoring a season-high of nine points during a victory, marking her first career start after stepping in for an injured teammate.
This season, Liberty anticipates missing up to three players for the Eurobasket tournament.
Interestingly, Sabally is the second Liberty player to forgo the international competition, following Marine Johannes’ decision to participate for France.
Meanwhile, forward Leonie Fiebich has left the team to join the German national squad and is set to compete throughout the entire tournament, scheduled from June 18 to 29.
Fiebich’s absence will be felt as she provided significant contributions in her games, averaging 6.7 points and 3.8 rebounds while shooting an impressive 48% from three-point range.
