NYC-area flights grounded as severe weather, thunderstorms pummel metro region

Flights in the New York City area were suspended Thursday morning due to heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Flights at LaGuardia Airport, Newark International Airport, Westchester County Airport and Teterboro Airport are affected by severe weather and thunderstorms, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

According to the FAA, delays for flights departing from Newark and LaGuardia were reported averaging about 30 minutes at Newark and LaGuardia, with delays expected until around 11 a.m. at other metropolitan airports.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued until 10:45 a.m. for all of New York City, including Brooklyn and Queens.

Due to the storm, planes will not be allowed to depart from Newark, Westchester, LaGuardia or Teterboro until at least 11 a.m.

The thunderstorms are also expected to affect arriving flights, causing delays ranging from an hour to an hour and 15 minutes or more, according to the FAA.

The FAA says a traffic management program is currently in place for aircraft arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
