NYC area swamped by unexpected rainstorms, new heat wave looming

The New York metropolitan area was hit by heavy, unexpected rain on Saturday, bringing a one-day drop in temperatures after a week of scorching heat.

“The rain has pretty much stopped for today,” said Fox Weather forecaster Cody Blood. “We’re going to see some sunshine here,” Blood said, noting that it will “gradually clear up” as the clouds dissipate.

With temperatures in the low 80s Fahrenheit, the air remains significantly cooler than last week, but the high humidity means the “actual feels like temperature” is still above 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Another heat wave will hit the region on Sunday, with temperatures again climbing into the low to mid 90s Fahrenheit and a heat index as high as 97. Scattered rain is possible Sunday afternoon, Blood said.

But that won’t dampen the temperatures, which are expected to soar to a high of 95 degrees Monday through Wednesday.

The heat will “peak” on Tuesday and continue through Wednesday. “Taking into account the humidity, it’s going to feel like it’s probably in the mid 100s, 103, 104, 105 to above 100,” Blood said.

The latest surge will subside Wednesday night “and then continue to drop through the remainder of the week,” he added. Highs are expected to be in the mid-80s on Thursday and Friday.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the New York City area until 8 p.m. Monday.

Heavy rains Saturday morning and afternoon disrupted air travel at all three metropolitan airports, with at least 77 flights canceled at John F. Kennedy Airport, at least 56 at LaGuardia Airport and at least 59 at Newark Liberty International Airport, according to tracking service FlightAware. Schedules at all three airports had largely returned to normal by late afternoon.
