Brooklyn Judge Allows Repeat Offender to Remain Free

A Brooklyn eatery frequenter, previously arrested multiple times for allegedly deceiving upscale restaurants, continues to be at large after a judge decided against imposing bail. The individual in question, Pei Chong, 34, was granted supervised release by Brooklyn Criminal Court Judge Jevette Johnson during her arraignment on Sunday, even as prosecutors argued for her detention due to new fraud charges related to incidents over the weekend.

Prosecutors requested a cash bail of $1,500 or $3,500 for Chung, who aspires to be an influencer but couldn’t find a way to pay the amount. This request came after she allegedly enjoyed expensive meals at two high-end establishments in Williamsburg between Friday and Saturday.

Chong had already faced five arrests since late October for similar offenses at various other popular dining spots, including a Michelin-star restaurant located in her luxury apartment complex.

Like the previous accusations, this recent situation involved charges of theft of services, a crime not typically eligible for bail, yet she was released. It’s unclear why the prosecution sought bail in this instance.

Legal experts have noted that if Chong continues her antics, she might eventually face felony charges. Defense attorney Mark Bedrow commented that after a certain number of offenses, she could be charged with a scheme to defraud, a more serious crime.

Bedrow pointed out that unless Chong spends over $1,000 or uses a stolen credit card, her interactions with the law will mostly remain on a misdemeanor level. However, he believes that if the judge decides to take a strict stance, serious consequences could follow if Chong is found guilty.

Prosecutors might choose to take a hard line, potentially rejecting any plea offers, according to defense attorney Jason Goldman, who explained that an aggressive approach might be their best option to deter her future actions.

Chong, known for showcasing high-end fashion on her social media—including Prada heels and Hermès belts—maintains a modest blog reviewing meals while frequently posting about luxurious dining experiences.

As of now, her attorney has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding the recent developments.
