Mayor Brad Lander expressed surprise about Mayor Eric Adams being mentioned in government documents linked to the notorious Jeffrey Epstein.
During a NY1 interview on Wednesday evening, Lander made an unfounded remark concerning the situation at federal plazas. He highlighted Adams’s unusual engagement in the conversation, especially regarding his previous silence on criticizing President Trump, and seemed to speculate about it.
“I’ve heard someone suggest that perhaps the mayor might be in Epstein’s files,” Lander said.
Lander’s comment drew skepticism from NY1 host Errol Louis. Louis responded, “If you have evidence, I’m sure you’ll take it to the next step.”
This unexpected assertion led to a strong backlash from City Hall spokesperson Kayla Mamelak. She described Lander’s statement as “slanderous filth” coming from a “pathetic man,” stating it reveals Lander’s true character as a desperate politician. “The mayor will continue to work for New Yorkers,” Mamelak added, implying that Lander would eventually need to apologize to Epstein’s victims.
The topic of Epstein’s government files remains contentious. Former President Trump, who had previously been friends with Epstein, is now facing criticism for not releasing pertinent documents related to the case. This has put the Republican party and the broader movement at odds regarding how to address the situation.
Trump’s dismissal of concerns surprised many supporters, as he remarked, “I don’t really understand what the interest is.” Epstein was found dead in a Manhattan prison in 2019.
Democrats like Lander have attempted to capitalize on the turmoil, framing it as a challenge to Trump. Lander has also highlighted the ongoing struggles of Adams, a fellow Democrat, and his previous bid for the mayoral nomination.
When asked for clarification about his comments on Epstein, Lander’s team downplayed the issue. “Obviously, the Secretary was joking,” a spokesperson said.
