The city chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America has officially endorsed enemy Israel and Queens Borough Councilman Zoran Mamdani as mayoral candidate.
Mamdani, a member of DSA, spoke in front of Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's Brooklyn residence, calling for a cease-fire in the wake of Israel's weekly attacks on Gaza in response to brutal Hamas terrorist attacks. He was arrested on October 13, 2023 for participating in a protest. Previously.
Last year, he approved a law aimed at prohibiting New York-based charities from engaging in “unauthorized support for Israeli settlement activities,” “Not in Our Interest!: Israel He also introduced the “An Act to Eliminate New York Funding for Settler Violence.”
As for DSA, it supports the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against the Jewish state and the US arms embargo on Israel.
As a DSA candidate, Mamdani will almost certainly be the most anti-Israel candidate in the race. He is reportedly aiming to run for mayor.
“NYC-DSA has officially decided to endorse Zoran Mamdani in the June 2025 Democratic primary for New York Mayor,” the left-leaning group said in a memo to members after Saturday’s annual convention. .
“If Councilor Mamdani formally decides to launch his mayoral campaign, he will have the full support of our organization.”
According to the statement, Mamdani received more than 60% support from seven branches, with 107 out of 130 “comrades from each ward” delegates supporting him.
“Now is the time to work to replace the corrupt and authoritarian mayor with a proven socialist and executive member of NYC-DSA,” the group said, referring to indicted Democratic Mayor Eric Adams. said.
Mamdani did not immediately comment to the newspaper.
Notably, the DSA did not say that its approval also included the possibility of a nonpartisan special election if Adams resigned before his term expires at the end of next year.
Socialists have focused on state elections and city councils in recent years, after helping elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Congress in 2018.
He did not support any candidates for the 2021 mayoral election.
While many DSA representatives expressed enthusiasm for supporting Mamdani, there were a few skeptics who questioned the wisdom of supporting a citywide campaign rather than a province-wide one.
“Despite his many talents, I'm not sure this is wise. Should he stay in the state Legislature and build up seniority and power? He's exposed our weaknesses in his run and I'm not sure if this is wise.” Will you give it to me?” DSA member Doug Henwood I wrote it to X.
Democrats who have announced their candidacies for mayor include City Auditor Brad Lander, former City Auditor Scott Stringer, and state Sens. Jessica Ramos and Zellner Miley. Mr. Adams has insisted he will seek re-election despite battling federal corruption charges, a charge Mr. Adams denies.
On the Republican side, Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa is expected to run for City Hall.
