Doctor Admits to Sexual Crimes in NYC
A doctor in New York City, Zhi Alan Cheng, has been accused of groping patients under sedation and assaulting women he met on dating platforms, often recording these acts.
Cheng, 35, entered an Alford plea on Monday, meaning he admitted guilt to charges of rape and sexual abuse while maintaining his innocence on one count related to another alleged victim.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz commented on the severity of the crimes, emphasizing that Cheng violated the trust bestowed upon him as a medical professional.
Cheng, who worked as a gastroenterologist at New York Presbyterian Queens, faced allegations from his girlfriend regarding concerning behavior at home, where he reportedly used a drug-laden surgical mask to incapacitate individuals.
One victim contacted law enforcement, leading to a search of Cheng’s residence. Authorities uncovered disturbing videos, including footage of him groping a 19-year-old in a hospital setting, according to reports.
Additional clips surfaced, showing Cheng assaulting an unconscious woman in his home, many of whom had met him via online dating apps.
Prosecutors reported finding substances like cocaine, fentanyl, ketamine, LSD, and MDMA among Cheng’s possessions, further complicating his case.
Cheng’s medical practice has been suspended, and his legal situation is ongoing.
Sentencing is set for August 28, where he may face up to 24 years in prison.
