NYC Socialists Prepare for ICE Response

The New York City branch of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is gearing up to rally thousands of activists in anticipation of a federal immigration crackdown, as reported by the New York Post.

At a recent gathering, DSA leaders discussed their strategy to train around 4,000 volunteers—both members and non-members—to engage in what they call “rapid response” operations. These efforts aim to monitor and sometimes disrupt the activities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) throughout the city.

A DSA leader identified only as Marina expressed, “There has been enough activity in New York in the past to specifically deter ICE from detaining people.” This highlights their confidence in the local community’s ability to intervene.

Organizers are drawing inspiration from protests and confrontations involving ICE agents in Minnesota, which they view as effective tactics they hope to replicate in New York.

Among these methods is the use of whistles and other noise-making devices to alert neighborhoods about ICE operations, encouraging activists to respond quickly. Marina noted that “the whistle can reach far and wide,” making it an efficient tool for mobilization.

Meanwhile, tensions are rising in Minnesota, especially following the death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good during an ICE raid. Protests have intensified, with demonstrators demanding the cessation of ICE activities, evidenced by signs stating “Forever ICE Expulsion” and “Quit Your Job.” At one point, federal officers used tear gas to disperse crowds gathered outside the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building in St. Paul.

President Trump has hinted at the possibility of invoking the Insurrection Act to deploy military forces to the Twin Cities but later minimized the urgency of his comments, stating he currently sees no need for such action.

Additionally, reports emerged that the Army’s 11th Airborne Division has received orders to prepare for deployment to Minnesota, though it’s unclear if they will ultimately be sent.
