A truck became stuck in a New York City tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan, causing a miles-long traffic jam and firefighters cutting off the vehicle’s trailer, officials said.
The 18-wheel tractor-trailer truck went about a mile into the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel Thursday morning, and it took crews about two hours to remove the vehicle, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
“This driver blatantly ignored numerous highway warning signs and bridge and tunnel personnel who attempted to prevent him from entering the tunnel,” MTA Bridge and Tunnel Division President Katherine Sheridan said in a statement. Ta. “These reckless actions caused delays at the end of the morning commute and inconvenienced hundreds of other motorists.”
Photos released by the MTA showed firefighters using saws to cut through the truck’s trailer, its frame stuck in the busy tunnel and visibly bent out of shape.

“The truck driver ignored multiple warnings from B&T officers not to enter the tunnel, as well as signs posted at the tunnel entrance warning drivers of the 12-inch, 1-foot vehicle height limit. , the tunnel this truck entered was marked closed “with a large red “X” above the entrance,” the MTA said.

The truck was unloading a cargo in Brooklyn and loading paint before heading to Port Washington, Long Island, when it became stuck in the tunnel, the MTA said.
