NYC Mayor Eric Adams passes the baton to Zohran Mamdani as teams come together for important discussions

Transition Team Collaboration

Efforts are underway to facilitate a smooth transition between administrations.

On Wednesday, the transition team for Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani met with officials from the outgoing team of Eric Adams. This interaction stems from ongoing disputes between their respective bosses.

During a significant event in Manhattan on Thursday, Adams announced various key decisions are being passed onto his successor, insisting on an orderly handover despite potential challenges to his policies.

Adams remarked, “Bill de Blasio handed me the baton to address these issues, and I’m going to pass that baton to Zoran.” He added that their teams are collaborating to share crucial information for the transition process.

However, the optimistic tone from Adams seemed inconsistent with previous critical remarks about Mamdani made before the election. There have been suggestions of attempts by Adams to undermine the incoming mayor.

In recent weeks, Adams has taken measures to prevent a rent freeze and has pushed for more police personnel, alongside designating the popular Elizabeth Street Gardens as a public park. These actions directly contradict Mamdani’s stance.

A visibly exasperated Mamdani acknowledged on Thursday that changes regarding Elizabeth Street could complicate his plans for affordable housing in that area.

He noted, “It’s likely going to be almost impossible to build affordable housing in the Nolita shelter because of this.”

Meanwhile, some supporters have voiced that Adams is solidifying a legacy of turmoil as he wraps up his term. Although not disparaging the outgoing mayor directly, Mamdani has commended Adams’ transition team for their cooperation.

The meeting at City Hall included Adams’ chief of staff and transition manager, highlighting a commitment to working together, despite the apparent friction between the two mayors.

Interestingly, there are indications that the relationship between the communication teams of both mayors may extend beyond the strategic disagreement between Adams and Mamdani.

According to sources, several members of Adams’ communications group have been reaching out about potential roles with Mamdani in the future.

Mamdani’s spokesperson, Dora Pekek, expressed optimism, stating, “We had a very productive meeting, and we look forward to continuing to work closely with the mayor’s team to ensure a smooth transition.”
