Mayor Responds to AOC’s Comments on ‘Woke’ Era

During a press conference on Wednesday, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani was asked about the recent viral comments made by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) regarding the “Walk 1” era, which she described as “crazy.”

Ocasio-Cortez mentioned on ABC’s “This Week” that some local council members label the “Walk 1” movement as insane, adding that it’s essential to evaluate what candidates are currently expressing.

In his response, Mamdani emphasized that beliefs can shift over time, but firmly stated he does not support defunding the police.

He noted, “Each individual has a duty to communicate to New Yorkers and all Americans what they stand for,” suggesting that these beliefs can evolve. “Sometimes it grows,” he acknowledged, referencing diverse perspectives in the community.

Moreover, he pointed out that he’s clear about his stance on public safety, insisting that defunding the police is not part of his agenda. “Providing critical public safety involves collaboration with police departments and various partners,” he asserted.

Mamdani continued, highlighting achievements in crime reduction since he took office, noting a record low in murders and shootings in New York City within the first months of his administration.

In a separate radio interview, he clarified that his administration does not align with the Democratic Socialists of America’s (DSA) calls for police abolition.

Although he praised the efforts of the NYPD, Mamdani stressed that achieving public safety shouldn’t compromise justice. “New Yorkers shouldn’t have to choose between security and justice,” he remarked.

Yet, he faces scrutiny given his past tweets advocating for the defunding and dismantling of the NYPD, a point that critics are ready to highlight. In one notable tweet from June 2020, he called for a complete rethinking of the city’s approach to policing.

New York State Republican Party communications director David Laska criticized Mamdani for attempting to distance himself from his earlier positions, commenting on the lasting impact of the “woke” era on Americans’ sentiments towards such policies.

Laska added that Mamdani’s shifting views might not sit well with constituents who remember his past statements and actions. “Zoran Mamdani is a radical socialist who defunded the police and supports Hamas. His own words reveal his true position,” he stated, urging voters to make their voices heard in upcoming elections.
