The pilot program was introduced Thursday by New York Mayor Eric Adams as part of the city’s latest effort to crack down on underground violent crime.

The scanners will be installed at specific stations along the five boroughs after a legally required 90-day waiting period.

Adams said officials will work to identify companies with the best expertise in gun detection technology.

The pilot program comes in response to a recent spate of deadly shootings and assaults inside the city’s subway stations. So far in 2024, the NYPD has seized 450 weapons on the subway.
