A professor who was fired from the School of Visual Arts last year for holding a machete to a man’s neck was fired from his most recent job at Cooper Union for sharing anti-Israel content, the report said. new york post.
“The Cooper Union fired me because I posted on social media about ‘Zionists,'” Shereen Rodriguez, 47, wrote in an email to students, adding that it was “fascism.” ” he added.[y]“Everyone is learning about it in real time.”
Rodriguez said in an Instagram post that he was expelled for making “public comments about ‘Zionists.'” It is unclear which comments led to Rodriguez’s firing, but the Cooper union said it does not comment on personnel matters.
Mr. Rodriguez is no longer listed as part-time on Cooper Union’s faculty page.
The Post reported that Rodriguez joined the City University of New York Palestine Committee in January to encourage the public to protest against landowners and businessmen with ties to Israel.
But critics said she was expressing anti-Semitic rhetoric.
Rodriguez reportedly posted a flyer on Instagram depicting a pro-Israel event with an edited cockroach.
Former Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. was among the participants at the event. “Look at this dirty fucking cockroach,” Rodriguez said. “Former Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. is a Zionist pet dog.”
Conversely, Jewish students at Cooper Union seemed relieved that Rodriguez had been fired. Jeffrey Lacks, a professor at the City University of New York and co-founder of the City University of New York School of Students and Equity, said, “Jewish students at Cooper Union are very relieved that she was fired.” “There is,” he said.
“What she said was really despicable.”
“Normally, I would applaud the university for taking action against this professor, but in this case, how can we say she did anything worse before hiring her? I mean, she held the knife to the reporter’s neck.” ,” Lux said.
“They shouldn’t be praised, they should be ashamed.”
In May 2023, Rodriguez held a machete to a reporter’s neck after he went to her apartment to ask questions about an incident in which the reporter had verbally abused pro-life Hunter College students.
Rodriguez apparently didn’t have much interest in talking about the situation, he told reporters.[g]Keep that motherfucker away from my door or I’ll cut you to pieces with this machete. ”
At one point, Rodriguez held a machete blade against the reporter’s neck, video footage showed. He then allegedly chased the reporter and assaulted him, kicking him in the shin.
