NYCFC discusses possible interest in Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah’s Future with Liverpool and Potential Moves

As Mohamed Salah concludes his time with Liverpool this season, it seems likely that he’ll have offers from clubs eager to sign him.

However, Brad Sims, CEO of New York City FC, clarified that there is currently no agreement in place for Salah to join the team, as he spoke with reporters in Atlanta on Wednesday.

This week, Salah and Liverpool announced that they would part ways at the end of the season, which effectively makes him a free agent since his contract was terminated a year early.

Sims expressed interest in bringing Salah to the club, stating, “I would like to get Mo Salah. We have not had any discussions with him or his officials.” After participating in the SBJ Business of Soccer conference, he emphasized the importance of a player genuinely wanting to be in MLS and New York City, saying, “We’re not trying to sell anyone on New York or the league or the club.”

Additionally, NYCFC has been mentioned as a possible destination for Salah, with sources suggesting that acquiring him might not be off the table, especially with the new stadium opening soon.

Coincidentally, this report coincided with NYCFC’s celebration of a construction milestone for their new stadium, Etihad Park, which is set to open summer 2027.

Sims noted that while a high-profile signing could be beneficial, he doesn’t see it as a necessity for the new venue. He mentioned, “Does it help? Of course. I think the direction the league is heading is exciting, as it adjusts to match the top leagues globally.”

He also acknowledged that while big names can attract attention, the club needs players who are a good fit for their culture and team dynamic. “We need someone who would be a dedicated trainer, a solid teammate, and contribute positively to the dressing room,” he said.

In related news, The Athletic reported that San Diego FC is not looking at Salah, while the Chicago Fire is not prioritizing him for the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, MLS Commissioner Don Garber praised the prospect of Salah playing in MLS, claiming the league would offer a significant platform for him.
