NYCFC Prepares for Crucial Decision Day Match Against Seattle

As New York City FC came back together after the international break, head coach Pascal Jansen urged his players to concentrate solely on their upcoming match against the Sounders, known as Decision Day.

“Right now, our focus is on Seattle and nothing else. That’s how we’ve approached this season, and that hasn’t changed,” Jansen remarked.

The significance of Saturday’s game at Citi Field is clear, extending beyond just the points. While the team has already secured a place in the postseason, a win, coupled with a Charlotte loss or tie, would grant them home-field advantage in the first playoff round.

NYCFC’s impressive 11-5-0 home record this season suggests that playing at home could significantly influence their postseason journey. However, the pressure hasn’t seemed to affect the team, particularly their standout goalie, Matt Freeze.

“For the last eight games, we’ve acknowledged that we’re in the playoff picture, but every match felt like a must-win. We’re still taking it one game at a time, and that’s been our mantra,” Freeze shared.

While a win would improve their chances for home-field advantage, it’s also crucial for them to head into the playoffs on a positive note. Although NYCFC started September strong with three consecutive wins, they stumbled in their last three matches against the top-performing Philadelphia Union, finishing with one win and two losses.

Seattle presents a fresh challenge in the final week of the regular season. On the surface, the match seems less pivotal for the Sounders, who rank 10th in goals scored and have already secured their own playoff positioning.

Yet, their head coach, Brian Schmetzer, made it clear: “We’re not traveling across the country to just roll over.”

Jessica Charman, an analyst for Apple TV’s MLS season pass, emphasized the potential impact of this game on NYCFC’s playoff trajectory. “Losing points against Philadelphia and then again to Seattle could send them into the playoffs feeling shaky. Conversely, performing well could boost their confidence and establish them as a solid fourth seed,” she explained.

NYCFC recently welcomed back nine players who were called up for international duty, including pivotal players like Freeze. This left Freeze and teammate Aiden O’Neill in a friendly match between the U.S. and Australia in Colorado on Tuesday.

Jansen humorously mentioned how he tried to leverage the friendly rivalry between Freeze and O’Neill for motivation in training. O’Neill expressed excitement about facing Freeze, stating, “When we found out we were going to play, we were looking forward to it. Honestly, I wasn’t sure who would come out on top, but it was a great experience.”

Regarding the playoffs, O’Neill reiterated where his focus lies, while Jansen dismissed the idea of monitoring the scoreboard during Saturday’s game.

On the significance of home-field advantage in the playoffs, Freeze was straightforward. “Having home advantage would be fantastic. However, I’m confident in our team regardless of where we play. We just need to keep our rhythm going, stay confident, and another win would be a great boost,” he said.
