NYCFC to Move to New Stadium in Queens by 2027
New York City FC has announced its move to a new stadium in Queens, set for summer 2027.
The team plans to play in a new $780 million facility next to Citi Field, officially kicking off the 2027-28 season at Etihad Park. They chose to avoid a rushed transition during the 14-game stretch from February to May 2027.
This decision was influenced by Major League Soccer’s change in calendar, moving from a spring-to-fall schedule to one that mirrors Europe’s by running summer to spring.
NYCFC will have 14 transition season home games at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field.
“We are excited to welcome our fans to the inaugural match at Etihad Park,” said NYCFC CEO Brad Sims. “Construction is going extremely well and remains on track. With MLS adjusting its competitive calendar, we believe it’s best to launch Etihad Park at the beginning of the 2027-28 season, marking a new chapter for both the league and our club.”
“This timing allows our fans to fully experience Etihad Park from the very start, rather than jumping in mid-transition.”
Sims had earlier hinted that a summer 2027 opening was feasible.
The upper section of the stadium is expected to be finished by late March or early April, marking a significant construction milestone with the installation of the final, tallest beam.
A test event is also planned ahead of the official opening.
“This strategy lets us properly honor the final games at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, prepare carefully for the transition, and create a meaningful and historic debut that reflects our values and connection to the city,” Sims added.
Etihad Park will be the first soccer-specific venue across the five boroughs and is part of a larger development initiative at Willets Point, close to the Mets’ stadium.
The stadium will hold 25,000 fans and is already scheduled to host matches during the soccer portion of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
