The NYPD plans to take significant measures on July 4th. Sources within the police department indicate that there’s a looming threat from isolated individuals and foreign terror sympathizers, specifically in New York City.
Key roads, bridges, and subway services will shut down hours ahead of the Macy’s fireworks display, with a noticeable increase in police presence as fears from international tensions seep into the city.
“We’re operating within a challenging threat environment due to these international tensions and domestic issues. The NYPD, along with federal authorities, continues to monitor the risks posed by individuals inspired by global events,” explained an official.
While the NYPD is proceeding with heightened caution, Commissioner Tish noted that there aren’t any known credible threats for this year’s festivities.
Nonetheless, an internal assessment shared with relevant parties has highlighted serious and ongoing concerns about isolated criminals and small extremist factions driven by various ideological and personal issues.
The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have labeled supporters of domestic violent extremists and foreign terrorist organizations—particularly those sympathetic to Hamas—as the most likely culprits to orchestrate attacks during the massive July 4th celebrations.
Potential targets include different communities, like Muslim, Christian, Arab, and Jewish groups. Authorities have flagged the Israeli Consulate, situated just five miles from the Brooklyn Bridge, and various popular fireworks viewing areas as particularly vulnerable.
Concerns also extend to extremists motivated by white supremacy or anti-government sentiments. According to internal memos, “Radicalized individuals, particularly those active online, are among our greatest worries since they can remain undetected until they strike.”
There are fears that an attack might manifest as a car bombing or a vehicle-ramming incident akin to the one in New Orleans on New Year’s Day that involved ISIS and resulted in multiple casualties.
In light of these risks, the NYPD will enforce several closures:
- The Brooklyn Bridge will close to vehicle and pedestrian traffic starting at 9 a.m. and will reopen at 4 a.m. the following day.
- The FDR Drive will be shut down in both directions from East Houston to West Street; no access will be allowed from the elevated section starting at 3 p.m. until 6 p.m.
- Brooklyn’s waterfront area will restrict entry from 2 p.m., allowing only ticket holders and locals with proof of residency.
- Public transport will operate under Saturday schedules, while some subway stations will be closed.
- Attendees will not be permitted to bring large bags, alcohol, or other items that could pose safety risks or obstruct views.
Both the FBI and DHS are monitoring drones over the NYPD’s jurisdiction, as they’ve reported a growing concern regarding unauthorized drone activities.
Commissioner Tish remarked, “The threat from armed drones is realistic and increasingly serious, as we’ve seen in various global contexts.”
With hundreds of NYPD officers deployed across the five boroughs, and additional patrols by the FDNY and Coast Guard on the East River, the presence of law enforcement will be noticeable.
“Whether you’re along the river or celebrating in the streets, thousands of officers will be visible,” Tish affirmed. “Our aviation units and drone surveillance will ensure we can monitor conditions in real time, providing an extensive collaborative effort among city, state, and federal resources.”
