NYT poll finds majority of Democrats oppose transgender athletes in women’s sports

Of the 1,025 people who said they were a Democrat or Democratic-leaning, 67% said transgender athletes should not be allowed to compete against women.

Of the 1,022 Republicans, that percentage was 94%.

The 81 independents interviewed represented the group least willing to say transgender athletes should not be allowed to compete. Only 64% said they were against it, and 26% refused to answer. Only 3% of Democrats and 1% of Republicans refused to answer.

The country saw a notable shift in awareness and opposition to the issue of transgender athletes in women's sports in 2024, with a number of articles generating national attention and controversy. The issue has become a key campaign issue for President-elect Trump and other Republicans in the November election.

With Trump set to return to office on Monday, Republicans are pushing for legislation to address the issue.

The Protecting Women and Girls in Sports Act passed the House of Representatives on Tuesday, with support from two Democratic members of Congress.

The bill will now go to the Republican-controlled Senate, where if it passes, President Trump will be able to sign it into law early in his term.
