Obama Supports Newsom’s Gubernatorial Plans
Former President Barack Obama expressed his respect for California Governor Gavin Newsom on Wednesday, following Newsom’s push for districts to increase Democratic representation. Obama described Newsom’s method as responsible, pointing out that they wouldn’t pursue total maximization unless states like Texas take similar actions.
During a fundraiser at Martha’s Vineyard, Obama remarked, “We’re going to do that only if Republican states start pulling these tactics; otherwise, this won’t be enforced.” He also commended Democrats who left Texas as “an inspiration.”
In a post on X, Obama noted that gerrymandering should not be a part of politics; rather, it should be a straightforward competition between Republicans and Democrats based on their ideas. The situation in Texas and California is complex, as both states possess numerous House seats that could significantly influence Congress’s balance in 2026. Analysts suggest that if Newsom’s initiative is successful, it could add five more seats for California while potentially diminishing Republican influence in Texas.
With the midterm elections around the corner, Newsom is countering redistricting efforts from Texas. Recent meetings conducted by GOP state lawmakers in Austin have been embroiled in conflict, as many Democrats left Texas to thwart the Republicans’ attempts to establish new district maps.
Obama highlighted how Texas has adopted strategies from a partisan White House over the last decade, using gerrymandering to sustain its power despite unpopular policies. He believes Newsom is taking a thoughtful and measured approach to address specific political challenges.
Newsom aims to hold special elections this year to seek voters’ approval for reversing the constitutional amendments that initiated a nonpartisan redistricting commission, which has sparked resistance from Republican legislators in California.
