Barack Obama Critiques Texas Republicans on Gerrymandering
Former President Barack Obama has called out Texas Republicans for engaging in gerrymandering, a practice where district lines are redrawn to favor certain political parties. This has pushed Texas Republicans to introduce new legislation in their state legislature.
Currently, these Republicans are attempting to pass district rezoning laws during special sessions, but their efforts have been complicated by national Democrats leaving the state to prevent a quorum necessary for voting.
Obama expressed concern over this situation. He mentioned, “We can’t focus on what’s important. Right now, Texas Republicans are trying to manipulate the district lines to unfairly secure five seats in the upcoming midterm elections.”
In response to Obama’s remarks, Utah GOP Senator Mike Lee pointed out the perceived hypocrisy, stating via social media that Democrats term it ‘gerrymandering’ in a Republican state, while in places like Illinois, they call it ‘democracy.’
Obama took to social media to comment on gerrymandering, emphasizing his past involvement in launching a campaign with Eric Holder aimed at promoting fair districting. He noted, “Three years ago, I helped @ericholder fight gerrymandering and start @AllonTheline, a people-driven initiative for fair constituencies.”
Reflecting on his past speeches, he reiterated the importance of halting practices that allow politicians to select their voters rather than the other way around.
