Obama Condemns Violence After Threat to Trump at Event

Following a distressing incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where an assassination attempt was made on President Donald Trump, former President Barack Obama took to X on Sunday to denounce the violence and urge a national repudiation of such acts.

The event, which took place just after 8:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Washington Hilton, involved a gunman named Cole Tomas Allen, 31, who tried to breach security before opening fire on law enforcement officers.

Thankfully, the president and several members of his Cabinet were evacuated safely while guests remained in place. One U.S. Secret Service agent was struck but, fortunately, his bulletproof vest prevented serious injury, and there were no other reported casualties.

“Although we don’t yet have the details about the motives behind last night’s shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner, it’s incumbent upon all of us to reject the idea that violence has any place in our democracy,” Obama expressed in his post. He added, “This is a sobering reminder of the courage and sacrifice that U.S. Secret Service agents show every day. I’m grateful to them – and thankful that the agent who was shot is going to be okay.”

Allen, who had traveled to Washington, D.C., days before the event, was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives when he approached the security checkpoint on Saturday night. Authorities believe he acted alone, but material found in his hotel room is still under investigation.

In a manifesto, Allen allegedly wrote, “Administration officials, (not including Mr. Patel), they are targets, prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest. I experience rage thinking about everything this administration has done.” He continued, “And I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes.”

During an impromptu news conference after the attack, Trump encouraged Americans to resolve their political differences peacefully.

“I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our differences peacefully,” Trump said from the White House. He also mentioned the diverse political representation at the event, saying, “There was a tremendous amount of love and coming together. I was very, very impressed by that.”
