Investigation into Assassination of Charlie Kirk
Authorities are actively seeking the individual responsible for the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA. Witnesses have described the scene at Utah Valley University (UVU) as one with surprisingly little security during the event when the shooting occurred.
A local high school student named Sam, who was present, remarked, “There weren’t many officers around. I’ve seen more police at sporting events here than today.” He also expressed concern regarding the absence of security protocols, such as bag checks, which could have potentially helped prevent the tragedy.
“There were officers located above the aisle where items were being thrown at him,” Sam added. “Why wasn’t there adequate security to manage the crowd closer to him?”
Charlie Kirk, known for his discussions on politics at college campuses nationwide, was shot during an event at UVU. Initially, a suspect was taken into custody, but authorities soon determined that person was not the shooter.
Cooper Brown, who managed the microphone during Kirk’s event, recounted, “As soon as the Q&A began, I heard a loud pop. I looked to my right, and there was Charlie, his body shaking while blood started to flow from his neck.”
Witnesses noted that as shots were fired, panic erupted in the crowd, with some people instinctively hitting the ground. Once it was clear that no further shots followed, many hurried to help others escape the chaotic scene.
Ryan DeBrees, a first responder who had left his firearms in his car, mentioned he expected to encounter metal detectors before entering the venue. He, too, was taken aback by the security measures—or lack thereof—at the event.
The atmosphere turned frantic as DeBrees navigated through a tightly packed audience. He heard what initially sounded like celebratory fireworks before witnessing Kirk collapse.
In the wake of the chaos, people scrambled, some taking refuge in nearby buildings while others jumped into a fountain to try and evade the situation. “Fear was palpable,” DeBrees reflected, observing the sheer terror in people’s expressions and hearing cries and screams echo around him. “It felt surreal, like a nightmare.”
Afterwards, he joined fellow attendees at the university’s Turning Point chapter for a prayer in remembrance of Kirk.
“It was a moment of gathering, a moment to heal,” DeBrees expressed.
