Ocasio-Cortez engages in a passionate debate about miscarriages: ‘I will not back down to disrespectful men’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) engaged in a heated discussion with her Republican colleagues regarding Medicaid at a House energy and commerce committee meeting on Wednesday morning.

The committee is currently evaluating modifications to Medicaid requirements, particularly for patients who are pregnant or receiving postnatal care while using the program’s services.

However, it’s unclear from the legislation whether mothers who experience a miscarriage will be exempt from work requirements.

New York State Senators raised concerns about whether pregnancies that end in miscarriage would qualify for Medicaid benefits under the proposed work stipulations. This line of questioning was interrupted by a GOP member who accused them of focusing more on the cameras than on the discussion at hand.

“Let’s have a genuine dialogue, not just for the cameras,” Rep. Randy Weber (R-Texas) stated amid the exchange.

Ocasio-Cortez attempted to complete her inquiry but was cut off by committee chair Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.), who insisted on moving forward with the discussion.

“But what about miscarriage?” she pressed on.

Carter reiterated his stance, dismissing her concerns. “The gentleman will give in. The lady is right here. Next point.”

Shortly after, Ocasio-Cortez spoke up again, maintaining her focus. “There are 13.7 million Americans on the other side of that screen. I’m talking to you because I work for you. Many districts, even among Republicans, have significant Medicaid involvement, so you need to understand what’s happening.”

She added pointedly, “Do gentlemen give birth?”

“That was a rude comment, and I will not back down. I refuse to be undermined by an unruly man,” she responded firmly.

Meanwhile, Rep. Yvette D. Clark (D-N.Y.) noted that members can’t control where others look during discussions. “When a gentleman from New York glances at the screen, he may want to adjust his hair or comment on what’s being shown,” she explained.

She emphasized, “No one here can dictate where other members choose to focus their attention.”

Recent weeks have seen escalating tensions between Democrats and Republicans, particularly concerning proposed Medicaid cuts.
