Ocasio-Cortez invests heavily in El-Sayed's campaign

Ocasio-Cortez Supports El-Sayed with Major Campaign Donation

Democratic socialist Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York is stepping up for Abdul El-Sayed. She has contributed $1 million to bolster El-Sayed’s campaign to secure a Michigan U.S. Senate seat against Republican Mike Rogers, following the announcement that Senator Gary Peters (D-Mich.) will not run for re-election in 2026.

AOC expressed her commitment, stating, “I look forward to working with Abdul … to build a politics that is free from the corrupting influence of corporate money.” This move signals that Democrats are becoming increasingly concerned about the competitiveness of the race as it approaches its conclusion.

“I’m not waking up on November 4 wishing I did more to combat the smears aimed at Abdul,” AOC shared in a statement to the New York Times. “I’m leaving everything I can on the field.” The Times noted that this donation is quite significant for a House member supporting a Senate candidate.

Winning Michigan is essential for Democrats who aim to regain control of the Senate, and this expenditure may be indicative of Ocasio-Cortez’s ambitions to enhance her national profile, especially with an eye toward a potential presidential bid in 2028.

Ocasio-Cortez visited El-Sayed in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on Thursday and has previously campaigned for him during the Senate primary and his gubernatorial run. Both are viewed as part of the more radical socialist faction within the Democratic Party.

In her financial disclosures, she reported raising $4.7 million during the last quarter, entering October with $17.4 million in available cash.

“Once he’s in Washington, I look forward to working with Abdul to guarantee health care as a human right for all Americans and to build a politics that is free from the corrupting influence of corporate money,” she stated, according to reports from USA Today.

El-Sayed’s recent primary victory over Rep. Haley Stevens was interpreted as a triumph for the left wing against the party establishment, particularly since Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had backed Stevens, who lost narrowly.

Recent polling shows Ocasio-Cortez tying with Pete Buttigieg at 9% for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. Meanwhile, El-Sayed has a slight edge over Rogers, according to Blaze News’ Poll Watch.

In summary, both Ocasio-Cortez and El-Sayed appear to be forging ahead in their respective political journeys, with their collaboration underscoring a broader strategy for the left within the Democratic Party.
