Ocasio-Cortez Urges Democrats to Hold Firm in Health Care Negotiations
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is urging her Democratic colleagues to remain steadfast in their health insurance negotiations and not to buckle under pressure as discussions to resume government operations get underway.
“They want us to blink first. We have too many people to protect,” Ocasio-Cortez explained during an interview on MSNBC’s “Everything with Chris Hayes.” “It’s crucial that we don’t give up before any negotiations even begin.”
When discussing the heightened concerns regarding perceived authoritarian actions by the government, she acknowledged that there have been significant abuses of power. However, she believes the opposition isn’t as strong as it may appear. “They project an image of power, relying on the perception of inevitability that makes people hesitant to stand firm,” she added. “But in reality, nothing will happen if you do stand up.”
Ocasio-Cortez pointed out that the opposition counts on people feeling powerless and ceding ground too easily. “At the end of the day, Donald Trump has relatively high popularity levels. Meanwhile, Republican approval ratings are underwater, and they are all too aware of that,” she remarked.
She defended the Democrats’ stance against the GOP’s fundraising strategies, emphasizing the significance of extending the Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits that are nearing expiration at the year’s end.
This year, over 24 million Americans have enrolled in the insurance market, with about 90%—which is more than 22 million—receiving increased subsidies. According to KFF, a nonpartisan health policy research institute, these additional grants saved the average enrollee $705 annually on insurance premiums. However, if these credits lapse, many will see their premiums more than double.
“For me, this isn’t just about tax credits or minor extensions. It’s about maintaining stability in our health care system,” she stated. “If the Republicans misuse legislative processes to undermine it, they also need to find ways to fight for it.”
New York Democrats are urging the party to maintain this narrative, asserting that it’s vital for them to show Republicans the impact of disrupting health care access.
“We need to stand up and recognize the importance of our voices and the need not to fall into irony,” she emphasized. “They will face consequences for their actions. But we must also be the ones that lead the charge. We need to be stronger now, alongside the everyday Americans who want to make their voices heard.”
