Ocasio-Cortez: Walz is driving Trump and Vance 'nuts'

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) said in an interview that aired early Friday morning that Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota, is “furious” with former President Trump and his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio).

“Trump and Vance seem to think they have a monopoly on masculinity,” Ocasio-Cortez said. told the comedian Stephen Colbert on “The Late Show.”

“And then Waltz showed up, and he was a football coach and he was the head of the Gay-Straight Alliance as a football coach,” she added, “and he was like, ‘Actually, this is weird and why are you acting like that?’ I think it’s going to freak people out because he’s showing a different way to be an honest man in America.”

Waltz has called Trump and Vance “wacky,” a nickname that has become popular among Democrats, with both the former president and his running mate pushing back against it.

“This weirdo. See, he called us ‘weird,’ JD and I, ‘weird.’ I think we’re quite normal people, like you,” Trump said while speaking about Waltz at the Factory earlier this week. “He’s weird. Have you ever seen him get up on stage and go crazy? There’s a certain insanity in the way he moves and the way she laughs. I think it’s a step above ‘weird.’ ‘Weird’ is a better word for it.”

Harris and Walz garnered attention this week when they addressed excited crowds at the Democratic National Convention, and their nominations, coming after President Biden dropped out of the presidential race, have been met with intense enthusiasm and energy among Democrats.

“The Democratic National Convention is clearly less energized and impactful. Democrats are ranting and raving with no message other than nasty personal attacks and outright lies. This contrasts with the Republican National Convention and President Trump, who have presented a positive vision for America,” Trump campaign communications director Steven Thune said in a statement to Congress on Friday.

The Hill also reached out to Vance for his response to Ocasio-Cortez’s comments.
