Tennessee Titans Seek New Head Coach Amidst Struggles
The Tennessee Titans are on the lookout for a new head coach following the dismissal of Brian Callahan, who was let go after a mere six games this season. The team has been facing the aftermath of a particularly hectic Black Monday in the NFL.
With a dismal 1-5 start in 2025 and an overall record of just 4-19, Callahan’s tenure was marked by significant challenges. The team struggled with both execution and subpar quarterback performance during his initial season.
Drafting Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick in 2025 didn’t pan out as hoped; his rookie errors ultimately led to the team losing valuable games.
After Callahan’s exit, Mike McCoy, a senior offensive assistant, took over as interim head coach. Under his leadership, the Titans finished last in the AFC South, boasting a 3-14 record – and only one win remaining in the season.
The head coaching role isn’t exactly a high-profile job given the Titans’ absence from the playoffs for four consecutive years. However, the opportunity to develop Ward as a quarterback might entice some candidates.
Coaching Candidates for the Titans
Leading prediction markets indicate a few potential front-runners for the head coaching position. For instance, Matt Nagy, the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs, is considered a top candidate.
Nagy and the Titans are set to meet for an interview on Thursday. There’s a connection there, as he and general manager Mike Borgonzi previously worked together in Kansas City.
Nagy made a return to coaching in Kansas City in 2022, after completing a four-year stint as the Bears’ head coach, where he had a 34-31 record and even won two Super Bowls during his time there.
Another candidate, Kliff Kingsbury, is coming off his own dismissal from the Washington Commanders. He had a notable last season, which saw the team make its first NFC Championship Game appearance in over three decades. However, injuries and an aging roster hindered his subsequent performance.
Then there’s Mike McCarthy, who has also emerged as a potential candidate. With a 7% chance of landing the job, he is fresh off a coaching break after parting ways with the Cowboys, where he struggled to secure a playoff win during his five seasons.
McCarthy is well-known for his extensive work with quarterbacks, mentioning his time with four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers. As of now, no interviews have been scheduled between him and the Titans.
Other figures like former Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, ex-Falcons coach Raheem Morris, and Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo have also garnered interest and are said to be interviewing soon.
